Latch Build is a Wanaka building company specialising in quality new homes, architectural builds, and home renovations across Wanaka and the wider Central Otago region. As Licensed Building Practitioners and members of New Zealand Certified Builders, we focus on delivering well-organised residential construction with clear communication from day one.

Founded by Cam and Tara, Latch Build combines extensive building experience with a genuine passion for creating thoughtfully built homes that suit the Wanaka lifestyle. Cam leads construction and project management on site, while Tara works closely with clients to ensure every project is well communicated and runs smoothly from concept through to completion.

Together with their team, they work alongside homeowners, architects, and designers to build high-quality homes that are carefully crafted, practical to live in, and built to stand the test of time in Central Otago’s unique environment

Meet Cam + Tara,

The Heart Behind Latch Build.

Latch Build is the result of two people with different skills but a shared passion for homes, creativity, and the Wanaka lifestyle.

Cam’s journey into building began on a lifestyle block in Drury, where he spent countless hours in the shed with his dad, an engineer and natural problem solver. Those early years sparked a love for crafting, fixing, and figuring things out. After moving to Wanaka to finish school, he quickly fell in love with the outdoors and the strong sense of community that makes this place special.

Cam completed his carpentry apprenticeship with well-respected local builder Tony Quirk, working on high-end architectural homes throughout the region. His passion for building eventually took him overseas to London, where he worked on complex projects including basement constructions in tightly packed neighbourhoods. Leading large teams and managing major budgets broadened his experience and deepened his appreciation for well-run building projects.

Tara grew up in Whanganui on a deer farm, surrounded by nature and the outdoors. Creativity has always been part of her life, which led her to Wellington to study costume construction. While living in flats after leaving home, she discovered a love for interiors - constantly rearranging rooms, styling spaces, and searching for ways to make a home feel more beautiful and functional.

Her passion for design grew even stronger when Cam and Tara built their first home together in 2019. The process of creating and styling their own home sparked Tara’s ongoing interest in interior materials, finishes, and the details that turn a house into a home.

Cam and Tara met in Wanaka and built both a life and a business together. In 2020 they started Latch Build, combining Cam’s construction experience and project management with Tara’s client communication and design perspective.

Today, Latch Build focuses on delivering high-quality homes with something many building projects lack - organisation and clear communication. Cam leads construction and project management, while Tara works closely with clients, ensuring they feel informed and supported throughout the process.

Together, they are raising their two boys, Angus and Hamish, and continue to build homes that reflect the lifestyle and landscape that drew them to Wanaka in the first place.

When Cam & Tara are off the clock, you’ll likely find them mountain biking local trails, out for a walk on one of the many beautiful trails, or camping with the family in their caravan somewhere around Central Otago.

Our Team

Cam is our director and a highly skilled builder, bringing 18 years of invaluable experience in the building industry. His expertise ensures that there’s no problem he can't solve. With a deep passion for architecturally designed homes, Cam enjoys the finer details of every project.
Outside of work, Cam cherishes spending time with his family and enjoys mountain biking adventures with friends. He also loves to gather around the outdoor fire, where he showcases his culinary skills by whipping up delicious pizzas.

Tara leads client communications at Latch Build, providing clear, consistent weekly updates and ensuring clients feel informed and supported throughout their build journey.
With a keen eye for detail, Tara also oversees marketing and social media, showcasing the quality work delivered on site. Her passion for the building industry, combined with a strong interest in interior design, drives her to present our projects in their best light.
Outside of work, Tara enjoys making the most of the outdoors around Wānaka with their dog Max, spending time with family and friends, and indulging her creative side through painting.

Angus is our highly skilled and qualified carpenter, known for his strong Scottish accent and friendly demeanour. With a keen eye for detail, he takes immense pride in his work, particularly when it comes to achieving that perfect cedar finish. On-site, Angus leads jobs with confidence, ensuring everything runs smoothly while expertly managing material orders and other staff members.
When he's not building, you can find Angus spending quality time with his partner, Tayla, and their dog Chess, enjoying a round of golf, or cooking up a chunk of meat on the smoker.

Ben has been in the building trade for 12 years, with 3 years honing his skills in the UK and the past 9 years building here in NZ.
He thrives on finishing work - the stage of a build where precision, craftsmanship and attention to detail really count. Ben especially enjoys architectural details, where problem-solving and creativity come into play and no two days feel the same.
Outside of work, you’ll find him making the most of the outdoors and everything this beautiful part of the world has to offer.

Daniel began his apprenticeship in January 2024 and has been working in the building trade for over two years. Building has always been part of his life, having grown up around roofing and renovation projects through family involvement in the industry.
He particularly enjoys roof framing and being up high on site, along with the opportunity to think on his feet and problem-solve throughout the build. Daniel is drawn to intricate projects with lots of moving parts, which naturally fuels his interest in renovations and architectural new homes.
Outside of work, Daniel is a keen speedway fan, following stockcars over summer and skiing through winter. He also enjoys woodturning and furniture making, getting into the hills hunting, and spending time on the boat chasing big fish.
